Beyond Aromatherapy: Using Fragrance Oils for Mood Enhancement

Using fragrance oils to boost your mood is not a recent discovery. People enjoyed pleasant smells in the past, too, and believed that improved their well-being. And we must say they were quite right.

For example, many believe that rosemary, jasmine, lavender, or lemon aromas can relax you and boost your productivity. Different scent combinations have different effects on you. Other great examples are the aromas of sweet orange, bitter orange, and neroli, which have relaxing features and fight anxiety.

So, if you sometimes feel better immediately after you smell your favorite perfume or inhale the aroma of freshly baked cookies, you understand how scents can affect your mood.

That’s why fragrance oils are so popular today, as you can find on this site or around the stores. As you probably know, fragrance oils are already essential to aromatherapy. Depending on the scent, they can be used as mood enhancers or to calm you down when you are stressed.

But how to use them to always enhance your mood and never let the anxiety bring you down?

We are here to help you with this one:

Use them in the diffuser

Diffusing essential oils is one of the best ways to create a cozy and comforting atmosphere at home. You can choose the exact scents you love, and even combine them to accomplish better results. Diffusers work great with any type of fragrant oil. You only have to make sure it’s not toxic for pets or children.

Choose calming aromas like lavender, bergamot, peppermint, or neroli. Surely you can go beyond it and choose chamomile, patchouli, musk, incense, or mint. This way you can explore many scent combinations and find which one works best for you.

Create a personal combination

You can use the scented oils to create an aroma yourself that will improve your mood. Of course, you can also explore beyond traditional fragrances. For example, what would you say if you tried combining a green apple with jasmine? Or maybe a cherry scent with ylang-ylang?

If you want to create a personal perfume, you can experiment with different fragrance oils. Mix them with nourishing oils, such as jojoba or almond, which have properties to keep the fragrance formula stable. You can create an infinite number of combinations, experiment, and discover different scent profiles.

Maybe one day you will be able to patent your fragrance and create a kind of niche perfume that will be of limited distribution.

Add them to your bath

If you enjoy a fragrant bath, you can always mix lavender or lilac aromas in sea salt and make a gentle body scrub with the mixture. You can also test several combinations of aromas or create something that is complete to your taste.

For example, find a recipe for making bath bombs (there are quite a few available online) and get inspired for different combinations. In the bathroom, we often like to smell floral combinations such as iris or peach blossom.

But you can also add coconut, sandalwood, or musk-scented oil. In fact, you can be really creative, even if you still decide to make a scrub using sugar, carrier oil, and a few drops of fragrant oils.

Add them to your body lotion

After you’ve bathed in your home-scented spa bath, it’s time to add some perfumed oil to your body lotion as well. It is best to put one drop at a time before use, so you can try different combinations. It would be best to use an unscented body lotion if you can find one.

The only thing you have to do is to ensure that the oil is suitable for use on the skin of the body. We recommend that you do not apply scented oils to the skin of your face, to avoid possible irritations. Be moderate with the body lotion as well, because the oils are very concentrated and you may have a reaction to some of the ingredients.

Make them part of your home

Fragrance oils can become a part of your home in a number of ways. We’ve already mentioned the diffuser, which releases fragrant steam all over your home. Another option is to mix distilled water, and quite a bit of white vinegar in a spray bottle and add a combination of fragrance oils to create a homemade room freshener.

You can do the same for the closets with clothes. Spray some of the scented solutions on paper tissues and distribute them in several sections among the clothes. In this way, the fabric will receive an aroma that you will surely like and can become part of your olfactory identity.

And of course, you can order custom-scented candles that have the aroma you like. Home candles have been all the rage lately, and it seems the viral popularity has made people want to try out a variety of candle scents. Of course, if you don’t want a candle, you can always use wax melts or the classic tealight diffusion.

Create your scented identity

What you are recognizable most for? Is that your perfume? Or maybe the softener you use for your clothes? If fragrances are part of your scented identity, it would be pretty easy for you to incorporate different fragrance oils. You can even collaborate with independent perfumers and have your own scent for yourself.

And we must say there is no better way to enjoy the scent, and even improve your mood every time you feel somehow down.

As you can see, it is enough to start somewhere. Then everything will become really easier and you will be able to combine perfumed oils to create your own olfactory identity. And of course, we must emphasize that each aroma has characteristics to improve your mood.

The only exception would be if a scent brings back bad memories. Because, don’t forget, the power of the scent is precisely in the associations it awakens in you. If something associates you negatively, then simply find another scent that is more pleasant to you and reminds you of beautiful things in your life.
